• Canberra Glassworks, Kingston

The ultimate in adaptive reuse. This project involved the conversion of a 80 year old power house into a modern interpretive glass centre that is open to the public and to artists.

  • Lake Crackenback Bridge, Crackenback Village Resort near Thredbo

This pedestrian bridge over the Crackenback creek is constructed of timber and natural poles at each abutment. The bridge is a classic small scale suspension bridge.

  • Woden Police Station

A two storey concrete framed building. The upper level floor are post tensioned. Extensive use of exposed structural/architectural steelwork including sun shade awnings and a suspended steel framed deck. The budget was $6M.

  • Clydesdale Pavilion

The outstanding feature of this building, which has been seen by many thousands of people at each year's Royal Easter Show and was used at the 2000 Olympic Games, is the extensive use of recycled timbers. The structural system utilised over 100m3 of recycled timber representing substantial reductions in C02 emissions and protection of a significant number of mature eucalypt trees. The structural system of internal posts and collar-tied rafters was chosen to best highlight their quality of finish in the design of the interior. For the architect, the aesthetic appeal of these beautiful old timbers - blackbutt, tallowwood and grey ironbark - is obvious.

To the engineer, the superior material properties of these old timbers allowed substantial innovation in jointing methods which allowed the structure to become an integral part of the architecture. Some of the jointing methods used date back to those used in the cathedrals of England in the 13th Century, and the lower levels are characteristic of 18th Century English joinery. The building was awarded an Institution of Engineers Excellence Award in 1998 due predominantly to the innovative use of recycled timber.

  • Wellington Correctional Centre

Wellington Correctional Centre is a $125M facility with 500 beds housing male and female inmates in minimum, medium and maximum security accommodation. The correctional centre consists of 31 individual buildings including a gymnasium, laundry, health clinic, warehouses, education block, administration block and an $8M gatehouse. The design period for this project was 24 weeks, in which time Northrop Engineers were required to produce fully coordinated sets of structural drawings approved for construction to all buildings.

  • NYE 2004 - Sydney Harbour Bridge

This dramatic structure was the highlight of the Sydney 2004 NYE fireworks display. The 25m diameter structural steel sphere, designed by Northrop for City of Sydney, was floated across the harbour on a specially modified barge and hoisted into position using very large cranes situated on the Harbour Bridge. It was then suspended using a crane boom from the crown of the Bridge.

Northrop has provided engineering services for all fireworks display on the Harbour Bridge since 2004 including the APEC Talks in 2007.
