South East Queensland - Looking ahead with Jeremy Sue

“There’s certainly a buzz and a positive sentiment around the long-term growth of South East Queensland right now,” says Jeremy Sue, Northrop Associate, Structural Engineer and Brisbane Leader.

Jeremy joined Northrop in 2018 and has lived and worked in the Brisbane region for close to two decades. Taking the reins of our 60-strong Brisbane team earlier this year, Jeremy believes that the positivity in the region is spearheaded by some key developments.

“The 2032 Olympics and associated civic and transport works, the Dexus Waterfront Precinct development and major government health expansion projects have all driven growth in the region.”

“An upswing in migration which has made up for lost time during Covid, combined with low rental vacancy rates and a slumped new home build market, also indicates that a residential resurgence is imminent.”

Whilst this all sounds rosy, there is certainly still caution within the market.

“We’ve seen projects stalling and taking longer to get ‘out off the ground’. The recent pause on interest rates has resulted in some short-term positivity, however we’re not holding our breath!”

“Our experience through the current climate is that relationships are still key. Clear and open communication, working collaboratively to find project smarts and aligning with how our clients define ‘success’ is still key to positive project outcomes.”

Delivering projects that matter

Our Brisbane team continue to work closely with clients to deliver significant projects for the region.

The team is nearing construction completion of the Southern Queensland Correctional Precinct, Stage 2 at Gatton.

“We’re proud to see out the delivery of one of Brisbane’s pivotal projects and are looking forward to the next opportunities in this space.”

“Our civil contingent is progressing onto the next phase of the Springfield Rise development with Lendlease, an additional 600 lots with Village 16 on top of the current 1,042 lots across Villages 17 and 18.”

Northrop also continues to remain strong in the industrial sector for Brisbane.

“Recent trends in this market sees the increased use of green concrete and inclusion of mass timber framing – two specialties in which we have extensive experience and know how.”

“We have also made positive progress in the sports sector in the lead up to the 2032 Olympics, continuing to work on business case projects for facility upgrade works across SEQ, whilst also continuing to focus on delivering education, health and community projects.”

Contributing to our communities

Contributing our experience and skills for the betterment of the region is important to Jeremy and the Brisbane team.

"We love being part of the local community, getting involved in committees, building relationships with local government authorities, and our clients enjoy the benefits of our local knowledge.”

Northrop has recently become a member of the Committee for Brisbane - an independent, not-for-profit organisation that is committed to helping shape greater Brisbane as the world’s most liveable place. Jeremy has also been appointed on their Equity Sub-Committee.

“We look forward to having the opportunity to join with corporates, creative industries, the higher education sector and community to help to shape a more dynamic and exciting city and region.”

A bright new space for an energised team

Our Brisbane team are freshly settling into their new office at Level 25, 12 Creek Street, Brisbane City.

“Our previous office had the teams split over two floors as we had outgrown the tenancy, so it’s exciting to have everyone back on one floor. The general uplift in the team and buzz across the office is palpable.”

“Our new workspace has been designed to maximise face-to-face collaboration and allows for future growth as we continue to build our structural and civil teams and look to diversify our service offering in the future.”

So, according to Jeremy, what’s next for the coming months?

“We are in the midst of planning for the next financial year, refining our local interface to the market and most importantly planning our office warming party to show it off to our clients – watch this space!”
